Finland is Flat

Finland, what a great place to live... And an even better place to ride flatland. The flatland scene is growing all the time, young kids are getting into flatland. Probably first flatlander in Finland was called Sami Suni, he brought flatland to Finland about 12 years ago. He's still riding, he's like a totally old-school rider. Then about 2 years after Timo Lanki (you probably recognize him as 2-fresh from BMX Plus! readers art) started riding flatland and he was busting out when I (Martti Kuoppa) started riding 7-8 years ago. I was totally inspired by him back in the days, probably without him I wouldn't have started riding flatland.

Then for few years flatlanders came and went. They weren't that dedicated. About 3 years ago some kid (Kimmo Haakana) showed up at my spot (tennis courts) with a really cheesy aluminum freestyle bike. So I asked him if he would be interested to learn to ride and he said yeah so I started to teach him step by step and he started to learn pretty fast and now he is at the pro level. He's doing lot of inside scuffing tricks, front wheel flips, backwards x-footed backpackers etc. Then about 6 months after Sami Kaastinen came to the skatepark and started to ride flatland he started to learn fast too, now he's pretty good too. He's doing something like backyard glide to x-footed tailwheelie, lard yard to 360 body variel to backyard, frontyard to body variel to freak squeak etc.

Then about a year and a half ago Jussi Laukkanen started riding flat, and he is learning fast too. What's up with these kids who are learning so fast??? I worked my ass off to learn something when I started ridding. I know about 6-7 flatlanders in Helsinki (the capital of Finland) but I'm sure that there is more in Finland. I guess it's about 30-50 flatlanders. We got a few good spots to ride too we got "Ruoholahti" it's red but really big and totally flat, the only miss is that lot of skaters and kids are hangin' out there. Then we got "Hietalahti," it's hockey rink for the rollerbladers, it's flat and it's concrete so it's good to do rolling tricks, I've only been riding there a couple of times but it's pretty good, maybe a little slippery. Then we got my favorite spot to ride -- tennis courts "Konala." I just like that place more than any other place it's big, flat ,no kids except Kimmo, he he he'In the winter we have a skatepark, well we had; they are going to close it soon and build some apartments there so Helsinki is looking for a new place for a skatepark.

I'd like to go ride now but it's raining...

Pyöräilijä (live)

Malminkartanosta kotoisin olevan Kuopan isä on muusikko ja äiti siivooja.
"Vihdoin", naurahtaa Suomen ainoa BMX freestyle flat land -ammattilaispyöräilijä Martti Kuoppa, 31, kuultuaan valinnastaan kaupungin parhaaksi.

Kilpailuissa Kuoppa esiintyy improvisaatiopohjalta.

Lajissa on mennyt kaksi kertaa rikki hampaat, huulet, kylkiluu. Lisäksi sääret ovat täynnä arpia ja Kuopalla on ollut kaksi aivotärähdystä. Kun ranne vammautui, se oli vuoden kipeä. Selkä kuulemma on aina kipeä.

"Tämä on kova laji. Olen urheilija, eikä tässä lajissa dopingit auta. Taitoa, kuntoa ja älliä tarvitaan."
